NATIONAL LEAGUE OF CITIES (NLC) PROJECT

CITIES OF OPPORTUNITIES

To address the social determinants of health, the National League of Cities (NLC)

launched Cities of Opportunity.  It is a project that seeks to improve the health and

well being of city residents.  Pilot cities were selected to develop and implement

strategic community plans to work across programs and agencies to improve health

outcomes for their residents.  The City of South Fulton was selected in the second

cohort year as one of 5 pilot cities.

Our objective was to use the first year as a pilot  to obtain research to preserve

agricultural areas, create community gardens, partner with a charter school to

assist with expanding the agriculture curriculum, monitor air pollution, obtain a

health assessment in environmentally stressed areas and generate incentives for

for economic development that includes mixed use projects that support community

goals and needs driven by them.
